Focus Turns to Federal Budget in Canada (1/21/10)

Statistics Canada of labour force figures for December 2009 show continued trouble for Canadian workers, and underscore the pressing need for the federal government to focus on job creation when it announces a new budget in March, says RWDSU Northern Joint Council President Derik McArthur.

"The statistics show that Canada has lost almost 342,000 jobs since a year ago, and that optimism over labour market numbers last month was premature," McArthur said. "The federal government needs to step up with new job creation programs and make strengthening the economy its number one priority."

Latest statistics show that the number of unemployed Canadians stands at 1,567,800, which is a 36.5 percent increase since a year ago.
