Hundreds Join "Hike For a Hero" in Ontario (10/9/09)

Almost a year ago, Cpl. Bill Kerr of Sudbury, Ontario, was struck by a roadside explosive blast while on his second battle tour in Afghanistan, and critically injured. The injuries will leave Kerr with limited mobility for life.

Led by the RWDSU Northern Joint Council, the Sudbury community has organized a fundraising campaign to honour Kerr's sacrifices by building a home for the soldier and his young family.

Like Kerr, Northern Joint Council President Derik McArthur and Business Reprentative Jeff Black are reservists with the 2nd Battalion, The Irish Regiment of Canada. In fact, both have known Kerr for years through their service.

"When Bill came home everyone was shocked by the war hitting so close to home," McArthur said. "His life has been turned around by this tragic event, and we knew something had to be done to say thanks to his family for making this sacrifice, and for the community to give back."

The latest part of this effort, and Kerr's recovery, was this week's fundraising walk, which saw Kerr walking on pavment for the first time since his injury.
