New Members at Genesis in Pennsylvania (10/28/08)

Local 1034 in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, has 70 new members. The service and maintenance employees of Genesis Hopkins Center, a nursing home facility serving the Philadelphia area, joined the union via an election on October 2.

"These members were in desperate need of a union voice," said RWDSU organizer Luis Lopez. "They were suffering from a number of issues in their workplace."

 Workers at Genesis Hopkins reported rampant favoritism, short staffing, scheduling problems, unaffordable health insurance and very low starting salaries.

The newly organized group is readying for negotiations for its first union contract.
