RWDSU Exec. Board Calls on Congress to Pass Financial Support Plan for U.S. Auto Jobs (11/19/08)

Michigan Lt. Gov. John Cherry addressed the RWDSU Executive Board, speaking about the importance of the U.S. auto industry.

The RWDSU Executive Board today unanimously adopted a resolution calling for the U.S. Congress to act immediately to save the U.S. auto industry. The resolution, adopted at the RWDSU Executive Board meeting, urged lawmakers to pass legislation that would provide the necessary financial support to ensure the economic viability of the industry and respect the needs of workers saving millions of U.S. jobs.

The measure was adopted after an address by Michigan Lt. Gov. John Cherry who described the devastating impact  the collapse of the auto industry would have on working families. "If the auto industry collapses, it is working people across the country who will pay the price," Cherry said.  “We need a healthy auto industry if we are going to rebuild the U.S. economy.”

“All workers will be affected by what happens to U.S. auto industry – whether
or  not they are auto workers or retail workers or poultry workers,” said RWDSU
President Stuart Appelbaum, referring to the impact that the failure of the U.S. auto industry would have on all workers.

“We all depend on a strong manufacturing base and healthy economy and we won’t have either if we allow the auto industry to flounder."
