RWDSU To New York City Council: Responsible Redevelopment in the Bronx! (11/17/09)

RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum (at podium) speaks at a press conference following the hearings.

The RWDSU and a coalition of unions and community activists demanded the responsible redevelopment of the Kingsbridge Armory site in the Bronx today at City Hall in New York City. Speaking before the New York City Council Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises, RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum urged the council to reject Related Companies' current plans to redevelop the Kingsbridge Armory. The current plans would see Related Companies redeveloping the site without signing a community benefits agreement which would establish living wages for retail workers, union neutrality in organizing campaigns and other community benefits.

"Not all so-called economic development projects deserve this council's support. Any project that creates permanent jobs that keep people in poverty does absolutely nothing to benefit the people of this city. In fact it causes them harm," Appelbaum said.

"The community benefits agreement that we have developed with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., would make sure that the redevelopment of the armory will benefit the people of the Bronx. It is a reasonable and responsible plan," Appelbaum added.
