Union Members Make Difference in Battleground States (11/6/08)

RWDSU members traveled by the busload to Pennsylvania to spread the word about Barack Obama.

In the aftermath of the 2008 Presidential election, it is becoming clear that unions and working families played a key role in the successful campaign of President-Elect Barack Obama.

Exit polls showed that union members voted for Obama in large numbers in key swing states that helped to decide the election. Polling shows that union members supported Obama over McCain by a 67 to 30 percent margain.

Union members also played a key role in getting the message about Obama's pro-worker policies out to voters. RWDSU members were among over 250,000 union volunteers who campaigned for Obama over the course of the campaign, helping him win in such swing states as Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

"Working men and women had a personal stake in this election, like no other time in recent memory," said RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum. "They voted for him, and beyond that, took time out of their busy lives to help with the important work on the ground that resulted in Barack Obama's historic victory."

RWDSU volunteers staffed phone banks on election day to get out the vote in key swing states.
