New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg (left) joined with RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum (center) and RWDSU Local 1-S President Ken Bordieri (right) at Macy’s Herald Square store on December 21. The mayor, who used the opportunity to buy a blender for his daughter, helped draw attention to the quality service provided by the Local 1-S members who work at the store. Earlier, Appelbaum told reporters that department store workers have had it especially tough this holiday season.

 

"Ask salespeople what the holiday rush has been like and they’ll tell you that they and their coworkers have never worked as hard or as long. They talk about being stressed out and near the breaking point," Appelbaum said.

 

"Too many retailers are cutting corners, hiring inexperienced, poorly-trained part-time workers during the holiday season instead of investing in a stable, full-time workforce that can better serve their customers," he added.
