"People Need Jobs, But They Don't Need Chump Change" (12/15/09)

A New York Times article today details the story behind yesterday's New York City Council vote to shut down the Kingsbridge Armory redevelopment project after negotiations failed to secure an agreement guaranteeing workers there a living wage and other benefits to the community.
 
The article describes the prevailing mood in the community surrounding Kingsbridge Armory and New York City: it isn't enough to provide poverty wage jobs when the community needs good jobs and the ability to join unions without intimidation.
 
"People need jobs, but they don’t need chump change,” said resident Jose Nuñez.
