RWDSU Rips Harper for Shutting Down Parliament (12/5/08)
The RWDSU has blasted Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper for suspending Parliament on Thursday. The move derails a "no confidence" vote set for Monday that the Conservatives were likely to lose.
"The Tories have sent a clear message that they're only committed to the democratic process so long as it serves their narrow interests," said RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum. "This is a sad day for every Canadian who wants leadership in Ottawa that will stand up for middle-class jobs and a strong economy."
"Working people in Canada have had enough with this Conservative government, which has shown it lacks the ability to lead the country through these difficult economic times," said RWDSU Northern Joint Council President Derik McArthur. "This latest move by Harper shows that while the Conservatives are not willing to take dramatic steps to help stimulate the economy, they are willing to go to never-before-seen measures to cling to power."
