Wal-Mart to Pay $40 Million to Cheated Workers (12/4/09)
Wal-Mart's disregard for labor laws has resulted in another large payout by the retail giant, this time in the form of a $40 million settlement to 87,500 Massachusetts employees who say they were denied rest and meals breaks, and were unlawfully denied overtime payments.
Last December, the company agreed to pay as much as $640 million to settle 63 lawsuits over wage-and-hour violations.
"It's no fluke that Wal-Mart has once again agreed to settle with employees who have sued them for breaking the law," said RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum. "The company continues to show a blatant disregard for labor law and for its workers in its pursuit of higher profits."
