Health care, the right to organize and legislation that would strengthen workers' pensions dominated the discussion today between the RWDSU and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.  Representatives of RWDSU locals with members in the New York metropolitan area were on hand for the discussion with New York's junior senator.

"Senator Gillibrand has an outstanding record on the issues that most directly impact working people," said RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum in describing Gillibrand's pro-worker voting record. "In her first year in office she has distinguished herself as a leading voice for working families."

"I will continue to fight for legislation that advances health care reform and protects working people when they organize," Senator Gillibrand said in the meeting.

Senator Gillibrand spoke about how health care reform can still be achieved in the current Congress. "There are issues that we can all agree on and we should move forward on those. We can also use the reconciliation process to address concerns about how health care is funded."

"It was a frank and candid discussion," said RWDSU Special Assistant for Public Policy Jane Thompson. "Senator Gillibrand showed a depth of knowledge and commitment to our issues that we all appreciated."
