RWDSU Candidates Win in November Elections (11/8/05)
Shields, who retired as Local 110 president after serving RWDSU
members for 15 years, says the elections will help bring a more
worker-friendly slant to politics in Cedar Rapids.
"We did very well electing union people," Shields said. "Four of the
five union-endorsed candidates won, and we will have a very
worker-friendly city council. I will see to that."
The RWDSU was a strong supporter of Shields, distributing materials and
going door to door in the days approaching the election to help bring
out the vote.
Local 108 Member Levy Wins in Atlantic City
Longtime union member Robert Levy, the Chief Lifeguard Supervisor for
beach patrol in Atlantic City, New Jersey, won election as Mayor of the
city. The new Atlantic City mayor is a member of Local 108's public
employee division.
Levy ran for mayor because he felt that it is important for working
families to be involved in politics, and to have a say in Atlantic City
politics at the local level.
"We are going to make a difference in Atlantic City for working
families," Levy said. "We are also concerned about Wal-Mart and it's
anti-worker tactics. Under my administration, there will be no place
for Wal-Mart in Atlantic City."
Local 108 contributed time and money toward Levy's campaign.
"We are always promoting involvement in politics by Local 108 members,"
Local 108 President Charles Hall, Jr., said. "When someone like Robert
wants to go the extra mile and run for elected office, we will support
them all of the way."
