(l to r) Congressional members Jerrold Nadler, Gregory Meeks, Nydia Velazquez, RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum, and Congressman Anthony Weiner pledge support for the EFCA.

The RWDSU joined other unions and members of Congress at a press conference in Manhattan today, where the group pledged to work together to help pass the Employee Free Choice Act. The EFCA is a critical piece of legislation that would allow workers to join a union by card check, when a majority of workers in a workplace sign cards to join the union. It would restore workers' right to join a union without the employer interference and harassment that runs rampant in the current election system.
RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum spoke at the event, and emphasized how EFCA would help workers.
"It's no secret that workers who belong to unions earn 30 percent more than nonunion workers. They are also 62 percent more likely to have employer-provided health coverage and four times more likely to have pensions. It's no wonder that more than half of U.S. workers - nearly 60 million - say they would join a union right now if they could," Appelbaum said.
"What we in the labor movement are saying is, give us the tools, give us fair labor laws, and we'll help give these workers the voice they want."
