First Contract for Sudbury Workers (5/29/07)
On Wednesday, May 23, RWDSU members at Best Western hotel in
Sudbury, Ontario ratified their first contract. The new agreement
eliminates an employer pay scheme that had long forced workers to
accept lower wages than their unionized counterparts elsewhere.
“The housekeepers were being paid by the room instead of hourly," said Northern Joint Council Rep. Rob Cullen.
"They were also forced to do all sorts of other work for free, but that's all changed thanks to the new contract," he added.
In addition to guaranteeing that workers are paid on an hourly basis, the three-year pact also includes pay increases and provides sick days, vacation days, seniority rights and a strong grievance system.
