Support the Protecting America's Workers Act by Writing Your Representatives (5/7/07)

An important piece of legislation has been introduced in the House and Senate which would expand OSHA and worker protections, and it needs your support. The legislation was drafted by U.S. Reps. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) and Phil Hare (D-IL) in the House. U.S. Sens. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced identical legislation in the Senate.
The Protecting America's Workers Act would apply federal safety standards to workers who are not currently covered, including federal, state, and local employees, and some private sector employees. It would increase penalties against employers for repeated and willful violations of the law, including making felony charges available when an employer's repeated and willful violation of the law leads to a worker's death or serious injury. The act would also protect workers who blow the whistle on dangerous working conditions and force employers to provide necessary safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, and respirators to employees.
"Passage of this bill would be a very positive step," RWDSU Health and Safety Director Steve Mooser said. "It would make OSHA much more effective in protecting American workers."
In 2005 ,the last year when data is available, more than 5,700 Americans were killed on the job, and more than 4.2 million were injured. With an average of 16 workers dying on the job each day, and an administration that values the bottom line of big-business over the welfare of workers, passing the Protecting America's Workers Act is a crucial priority for America's workers.
