Supporting Circuit City Workers at RWDSU Exec. Board Meeting (5/9/07)

During the first day of a three-day meeting, the RWDSU Executive Board today voted to file an amicus brief in support of fired Circuit City workers. The workers had been fired by their employer because their salaries were too high.

The RWDSU Executive Board felt that the action by Circuit City portrayed a blatant disregard for the employees’ contributions towards making their stores profitable.

The changing nature of the workplace and new strategies and models for organizing were also discussed by the Board. Janice Fine, a professor of Labor Studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey, congratulated the RWDSU on its work in partnership with community organizations and workers centers. The Board also reviewed the union’s community-based organizing of retail workers in New York.

The Board also reviewed the union’s finances and voted unanimously not to institute a per capita tax increase allowed by the union’s constitution.
