RWDSU Endorses Melinda Katz for NYC Comptroller (6/21/07)
“The men and women of the RWDSU have long been able to count on the support and leadership of Melinda Katz,” RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum said, “and we are proud to be here to show our early support for her as she campaigns for New York City Comptroller.”
“Melinda’s commitment to public service comes from her understanding of the concerns and aspirations of working people in this city. She has been an outspoken leader in the fight to keep Wal-Mart out of New York City. She stood with us as we fought to bring a fair and decent contract to the workers of Duane Reade. Throughout her career, she has always put the interests of the city’s working families first. We know she will bring that commitment and dedication to the Comptroller’s office.”
“Serving as the New York City Comptroller means more than just being an able advisor on the city’s finances, a careful steward to the $105 billion in pension funds and enforcing prevailing wage. We know that Melinda has the experience, ability and talent to be an outstanding steward of the city’s finances. But what makes good comptrollers great is their ability to use the resources and power of the office as an instrument to raise the concerns of working men and women and shape corporate policy - and Melinda will be a great comptroller.”
Councilwoman Katz said, “I am truly honored by this endorsement. The RWDSU has long led the fight for fairness and opportunity in the workplace for their members and all working people. The progressive values advocated by the RWDSU are ones that have and will continue to guide my time in elective office. I have been proud to stand with Stuart and the members of this union as we have fought against Wal-Mart and will be even prouder to work with them as Comptroller.”
