Local 1102 Members Let the Dogs Out on Historic Day (7/6/07)
RWDSU Local 1102 members who work at Nathan's Famous historic
original restaurant in Coney Island, New York, were on hand to make
sure that everything ran smoothly at the annual hot dog eating world
championship on July 4. The world looked on as Californian Joey
Chestnut devoured 66 hot dogs and buns in only 12 minutes, shattering
the world record and dethroning reigning 6-time champion Takeru
Kobayashi who only managed to eat 63.
Local 1102 members prepared thousands of Nathan's Famous signature all-beef hot dogs for the 17 competitors and the estimated 50,000 fans who were on hand to watch the super bowl of competitive eating events. The contest was also broadcast live on ESPN.
"I can't think of anywhere I would rather be than at Nathan's Famous in Coney on the 4th of July," Said Crazy Legs Conti, who ate a personal best 23.5 hot dogs and buns on Wednesday, which only 10 years ago would have won the contest. "All of the eaters appreciate the hard work of the Nathan's employees on this big day, and every pop of perfection of the all-natural beef casings on those dogs reminds us of their attention to detail."
