RWDSU Fights to Save the Wetlands in Canada (8/8/07)

The RWDSU Northern Joint Council in Ontario, Canada, has joined forces with the Citizens for the Preservation of the Nepahwin/lily creek Wetlands to help protect the local environment.

The union is working with the group to help prevent the construction of an office building and school on the south side of Centennial Drive. It is feared that the proposed projects will harm the wetland and floodplain in the area.

"It's ironic that developers want to build a school on the wetlands when over the years, this very plot of land has been used as a teaching aid and outdoor classroom and new developers want to destroy it," said NJC President Derik McArthur.

"Not only is this land important to preventing flooding and the beautification of the city, but also, the development of young minds."
