Bush Vetos Health Care for Kids (10/5/07)

President Bush made good yesterday on his promise to veto the expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which was passed by Congress earlier this week. The bill, which enjoyed bi-partisan support, would cover four million children, in addition to the 6.6 million already enrolled. The overwhelming majority of those on the rolls are in low-income families.

There are enough votes to override the veto in the Senate, but there are doubts that there are enough votes in the House to overturn only the 4th veto of Bush's presidency. A vote on the override will be held on Oct. 18, giving supporters of the bill two weeks to round up the roughly 20 votes they need.
