New Contract for over 500 Local 1102 Members at Modell's (10/16/07)
The pact covers Sales Associates, Cashiers, Receivers, Department Managers and Maintenance workers at the nation’s oldest, family-owned and operated retailer of sporting goods and apparel. Altogether, RWDSU Local 1102 represents 4,000 employees at 110 Modell’s stores and a distribution center on the east coast.
In addition to winning wage hikes, workers say their main objective with this contract was to protect their medical plan which includes no employee co-pays. They also wanted to increase employer contributions to the plan. They succeeded in negotiating substantial increases in both the employer contributions to Local 1102’s medical plan and to the pension fund.
Local 1102 member Bill Bailey, a Receiving Manager at the Aramingo Avenue Store said, “We were very pleased that we were able to again have the total benefit of the medical coverage covered by the company. Health care is one of the biggest concerns we had going into negotiations, and the negotiating team took care of it.”
Serving on the Bargaining Committee were Lorraine Cooper, Chirsty Doyle, Bill Bailey, Tom Stewart and Lew Tapera, with assistance from Local 1102 Secretary-Treasurer Tim Pranschke and Union Representative David Brijlall.
