RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum's Statement on Employee Free Choice Act (3/10/09)

When working Americans came out to the polls in force in Novemeber for President Obama and the Democratic Congress, they did so with a powerful desire for change. Today, we can see a direct result: the introduction in the House and Senate of the Employee Free Choice Act.

The Employee Free Choice Act is the single most important piece of potential legislation for working men and women. If made law, it would finally level the playing field for those seeking unions, after decades of abuse at the hands of employers who will stop at nothing to keep them from winning the dignity, respect, and voice in the workplace that union membership brings. It would also restore the original intentions of the National Labor Relations Act, which explicitly says that the nation's policy is to encourage collective bargaining and unions.

In a speech last week, Vice President Joe Biden called the Employee Free Choice Act a crucial part of rebuilding the American middle class. I couldn't agree more with this sentiment, and look forward to the day, soon, when the Employee Free Choice Act restores the rights of Americans to seek unions without the intrusive and often illegal interference of employers who fear the power of workers standing united.
