RWDSU Works With City, Retailers, to Help Industry and Create Jobs (5/20/09)
RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum (at podium) was on hand at City Hall today to join New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (to his right) and leaders of the fashion and retail industry at the announcement of "Fashion's Night Out," a citywide event to support local retailers, which will occur on September 10, the first night of New York City's popular Fashion Week. The event, sponsored by Vogue magazine, involves over 100 retail stores which will stay open until 11:00 pm and offer a wide array of special in store promotions and celebrity appearances.
"Working people in the city are hurting, and no more so than those who work in retail," Appelbaum said. "This initiative not only serves consumers, but helps provide a needed boost to New York's retail industry at a time when its needed most."
"Anything the city can do to help stimulate the retail sector by getting people shopping not only helps the industry and its workers, but, ultimately, our entire community," Appelbaum added.
RWDSU members are employed at many well-known retailers in New York City, including Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Syms, H&M, and New York & Company.
