Investigators Seek Cause of Slim Jim Plant Explosion (6/12/09)
Recovery efforts are over and the investigation has begun in Garner, North Carolina, where a Slim Jim plant exploded on Tuesday morning, killing three and injuring over 40 at the ConAgra owned factory. Over 300 workers were inside the plant at the time of the explosion. Employees at the plant are represented by UFCW Local 204.
A 25-person team of criminal investigators, forensic specialists and engineers has arrived in Garner to try to determine what caused the blast.
In 2007, more than 5,600 U.S. workers were killed by traumatic workplace injuries, and as many as 60,000 more died from occupational illnesses.
The UFCW has established a fund to assist the victims of the this tragic accident, and the UFCW is working closely with the investigation team as they work to uncover the cause of the explosion.
