NLRB Announces Proposed Changes to Union Election Process (6/21/11)
The National Labor Relations Board today announced that it is proposing amendments that will change union election rules and regulations to “streamline pre- and post- election procedures.”
The proposed amendments would allow for electronic filing of election petitions, establish set time frames for employer and union exchange of information and the election process, and defer litigation of most voter eligibility issues until after workers have voted on whether or not they want to join a union. According to the NLRB, the changes will remove unnecessary barriers to fair union elections.
“Clearly, these proposed amendments are a positive step toward eliminating the obstacles that have delayed and complicated union elections for decades,” said RWDSU Political Director Ademola Oyefeso. “Since the election of President Obama, we’ve seen a clear shift at the NLRB, which is now taking into account the concerns of working people.”
The proposed changes come on the heels of an April NLRB ruling that Boeing’s move of a production line from Washington state to South Carolina was illegally instituted to punish workers for previously going on strike.
