Super 8 Employees in Ontario Go RWDSU (10/8/08)
The employees of Super 8 hotel in North Bay, Ontario, have voted to join the RWDSU Northern Joint Council. The new Local 545 members, housekeepers, maintenance staff, and front desk employees, won a union voice through election.
RWDSU organizers have talked with Super 8 employees before, but the organizing drive started to gather steam earlier this year when there was a change in ownership at the hotel.
“When the new management came in, things began to change for the worse at Super 8,” RWDSU Representative Jeff Black. “Little thing like the Christmas party being eliminated, and big things like no more scheduled raises. The employees at Super 8 d wanted a union voice and a union contract so they knew what they were getting and what they were entitled to.”
Employees enthusiastically signed union cards, and when it came time for a vote, overwhelmingly decided to join the union. The Northern Joint Council is currently preparing to negotiate the first contract for the Super 8 workers.
